I love movies and have an extensive DVD collection but I admit one thing I am lacking in is classic movies.  I don’t know if I am just too used to contemporary film styles that are quicker paced or if I just don’t like black and white.  My collection does contain a few like Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz but besides that it is pretty sparse.  So in the past few years I started giving my grandma some of her favorite movies on DVD.  I had paid attention to some of the movies and actors she had mentioned over the years and I remember the first year I gave it to her she cried because she appreciated the thought that I had put into it.  I gave her a White Christmas DVD and some of her other favorites and while I was still at home found the time to watch some of them with her.

Here are a few classic Christmas DVD’s and other DVD’s that you can giver your grandparents as a gift and than spend some quality bonding time with them watching it.  They will not only love the thought but they will enjoy having a chance to spend time with you.

A White Christmas DVD

My grandma loves Bing Crosby and this is one of the holiday classics that showcases him and his crooning voice.  Add Rosemary Clooney, and Irving Berlin scores and you have all of the essential ingredients to make a classic film.  This is one film the studios spent some time and money recently to remaster and in late 2009 released A White Christmas with the best picture display as of late.  They also have lots of extras added onto the DVD including some of the original trailers.

Holiday Inn

This is what supposedly started a White Christmas.  Another Bing Crosby film and it highlights the songs of Irving Berlin, and this originally featured the song “White Christmas.”  Fred Astaire stars alongside Bing as they compete for the same women at a New England country Inn.  The Holiday Inn DVD is a great Film that leads to another classic and is worth seeing.

The Bishop's Wife

This is another Wonderlife-esque movie where an angel comes down to help a struggling man.  This time that man is Cary Grant and he is a bishop trying to build a new cathedral.  Unfortunately, he is so overconsumed with all of the efforts to get it built he neglects the things that matter most in his life, his wife played by Loretta Young.  The supporting cast is a great ensemble featuring David Niven and James Gleeson.  This is another great holiday film that will make a great gift.  Or just rent it and watch it with your grandma, she will love you for it.

Christmas in Connecticut

This is another one I gave as a gift because Dennis Morgan and Barbara Stanwyck were in it.  These were 2 of the actors that my grandma had mentioned to me that she had loved and so I went on a quest finding movies with them in it.  Barbara Stanwick plays columnist who pretends writes columns saying she is a housewife on a farm and writes about her experiences.  Of course, the problem is she isn’t that at all and when a sailor is about to stay at her house she is worried he will discover the truth and ruin her career.

Gone With the Wind

This is my all time favorite movie which is ironic since I don’t like classics too much.  But it has great acting, charismatic actors, drama, romance, war and all of the elements of our favorite movies tied into one.  It is truly an epic and I think I have bought the last 3 versions on DVD for myself.  I also have given them to my grandma and mom as a gift.
Recently they released the Gone with the Wind blu ray version of this movie and its amazing really.  I’ve seen this movie countless times and in all the recent versions but I had never seen it likes this.  The green in Vivian Leigh’s eyes make them sparkle, her dresses are nicely displayed and you can see why her and Clark Gable were as popular as they were.

This isn't a Christmas movie but it is a must have and will make a great gift for almost anyone.  If you don't watch anything else watch this and try to watch it on Blu Ray.

Other DVD's That Make Great Gift Ideas

  2. The Wizard of Oz
